As a new year begins, we look back at what we have accomplished this past year. In the fall, we published a new, revamped 2017/18 Annual Report for Dana Medical Library. This report gives an overview of the changes that have occurred recently with renovations, staff changes and library stats. Dana has had some insightful exhibits, changes in library education, outreach for our digital repository – ScholarWorks @ UVM, recently updated software, and a new drop-in clinic for EndNote. In this newsletter, we also highlight Dana’s virtual dissection table, the Anatomage Table. Enjoy!
Academic health science library users, like students and faculty, often bring their work home with them and need to access the library remotely to do their work. Library resources are easily accessible with a UVM NetID by clicking on the “Connect From Off-Campus” button on Dana’s homepage. Here is how you can gain access:
You will be prompted to log in with your UVM NetID. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll return to the Dana Medical Library homepage, but with one small change – the URL should now include the words “ezproxy.uvm.edu.” EZproxy is a service that lets websites know that you are coming from UVM and can get access to the resources we subscribe to. Now, you’ll be able to access library resources like databases, ejournals and ebooks. Want a visual guide to this process? Check out our tutorial video.
Not sure what you are looking for or need more help? Dana Medical Library also offers Research Guides and Tutorials that you can view from anywhere, anytime. See our full list of Research Guides in different subject areas to get started. If you need help using PubMed, CINAHL, or EndNote, we have a guide specifically for tutorials. Keep in mind that as long as the library is open, you can talk to us virtually via chat or give us a call!
The newest version of EndNote – EndNote X9 – is now available. This new version has many new features to help you in your research. For example, there are new templates for online media types like blog posts and Twitter. There is also a new function called “Manuscript Matcher” that helps you identify journals that might be interested in publishing your work. EndNote X9 also has enhanced sharing features that allow you to share more of your library with other EndNote users.
New users can download EndNote X9 from the UVM software download site. You will need a UVM NetID and password to download EndNote. Current EndNote users can update to the new version of EndNote from within EndNote X8. A special note for Mac users: MacOS versions 10.12 (Sierra), 10.13 (High Sierra), and 10.14 (Mojave) are programmed to save the contents of the “Documents” folder in iCloud if you have iCloud enabled for your computer. Do not save your EndNote libraries or your Word documents in iCloud. Doing so will eventually corrupt your EndNote library and disrupt the link between your library and Word document. More detailed instructions are available to help you work around this issue.

You can also go to Dana’s EndNote training webpage to make an appointment with a librarian at another time that fits your schedule. EndNote is a powerful research tool. Let us help you get the most out of it!
MedEdPORTAL is your gateway to health sciences education resources. Many people turn to PubMed first, but this may not be the best choice in many situations. There are two primary reasons for this. One, there may not be anything in PubMed on the topic. Two, PubMed mostly indexes articles about education topics, but not the actual curriculum materials themselves. In many cases, educators would be better off searching another database that focuses exclusively on health sciences education materials – MedEdPORTAL.
“MedEdPORTAL is an open access journal of teaching and learning resources in the health professions published by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).” Each article is actually a teaching or learning module that consists of a detailed description and the curriculum materials (e.g. PowerPoints, videos, quiz questions, etc.). These materials can be downloaded and used for free. Each module has also been implemented and evaluated so that educators can get a sense of how successful the module was and what potential changes they should consider when adopting it for their own classes.
Educators can also submit their own teaching and learning modules to MedEdPORTAL. All of the information needed in the submission process can be found on the author’s page. Please contact a librarian at Dana Medical Library if you need assistance with either submitting to or searching MedEdPORTAL.
Now available at Dana, we have several new titles, including topics on Cell Biology, Arrhythmias in Adult Congenital Heart Disease, Oncology PET/CT, and Neuroradiology, among others. Our newly updated titles include, The Big Picture: Gross Anatomy, 2e., Cardiac Intensive Care, 3e., and Essentials of Nuclear Medicine Imaging, 7e. Dana keeps up to date on the newest e-book editions as they are released to keep on top of current information. We frequently advertise new and updated e-books so keep an eye out!
Did you know that the Dana Medical Library has a virtual dissection table called an Anatomage Table? This Table is an advanced visualization system for anatomy education that uses touch screen capabilities. Just recently updated with the latest software, the Table’s screen is designed to fit a life-sized image of the human body. Images can be manipulated to show different anatomical sections with the ability to rotate and view the body or part from all angles. Layers of the body can be removed, certain sections isolated, and cross-sections made, all with pinning, labeling, and color-coding capabilities, among many other functions.
Professors and students have the ability to save a manipulated image for teaching purposes, examinations, or presentations. The Table provides curriculum-based tools, import/export capabilities, and an extensive archive of virtual images: full body and regional, CT scans, Histology, and case studies. The Table also has projection capabilities when hooked up to a separate computer and screen system.
If you are interested in learning more and exploring the uses of the Anatomage Table, please contact Kate Bright to set up a training session. Trainings show you the basics for use of the Table. Once you receive training, your name will be put on the permission list at Dana’s Main Desk. Once you are on the list, you can drop in and use the Table anytime the library is open and the classroom available. Or you can reserve the room ahead of time by contacting Kate.
Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book chosen as UVM’s 2022 First-Year Read, is the foundation for this exhibit, which explores ‘health and well-being’ and equities and disparities of America’s black population. The exhibit peels back the layers to look at the social determinants of health in a society: economic factors, health behaviors, health care, education, and environment, and offers data that points to the socioeconomic disparities that black Americans face and the subsequent health disparities that arise.
A higher percentage of black Americans live below the poverty line, face higher unemployment rates, and lower life expectancies than whites. The exhibit points to the racial inequalities associated with specific diseases and conditions such as rising U.S. maternal mortality rates (black women are dying at a rate 4x higher than white women).
What causes these disparities? What are federal, state, and local health organizations doing to address these issues? Stop by the library and learn more! Exhibit will be on display until February 2019.

After 16 years as Director, Marianne Burke retired from the Dana Medical Library at the end of March. At the University of Vermont, she oversaw 2 library moves, one to the Given Courtyard, the library’s temporary location during the construction of the current Medical Education building, and the move to the new library in 2005. She has overseen library renovations several times since, most recently last year with the construction of the new Larner Learning Commons. There have also been 2 separate occasions of flooding in the library which she handled with grace and humor.
Marianne graduated with a B.A. from California State University in Los Angeles in 1975 and then with an M.A. in Librarianship and Information Management from the University of Denver in 1980. She also received the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) certification in 1995, and was recertified at the Distinguished level in 2000.
Before coming to Dana Medical Library, Marianne worked as the Assistant Director for Resource Management at the Countway Library of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School from 1992 to 2001. Prior to her appointment at Harvard, Marianne held positions of increasing responsibility at Boston Library Consortium (1988 – 1992) and University of Colorado Libraries (1981 – 1988), among others. At the University of Vermont, she has established herself as a contributing member of the UVM Medical Community and has served well as medical library ambassador to students, faculty, administrators, and affiliates. She has taught and advised, held positions on many committees, published papers, and presented frequently over the years.
She is currently completing her PhD in Clinical and Translational Science at UVM. Though we have said goodbye to Marianne as Director, she will be returning to the library as a student. We look forward to seeing her in and around the health science complex. We wish Marianne well in her future endeavors!
What I’ve seen in the short time that I’ve been here is Marianne’s unerring dedication to the library. She has a love for Dana and a commitment to it that is steadfast. She is dedicated to representing the library professionally, she is not afraid to fight for what the library needs, she sees the value in inclusivity and stands as a good advocate for the community that has been built here.

Dana Welcomes Donna O’Malley as Interim Director
We are pleased to announce that Donna O’Malley is fulfilling the role of Interim Director at Dana Medical Library as of April 1st. Donna has been a faculty member in the libraries since 1985. Her research interests center on scholarly communication, including software tools for accessing and organizing published scholarship, as well as methods for facilitating the publishing and sharing of research. Donna has led the UVM Libraries Institutional Repository group, coordinating the growth and development of ScholarWorks @ UVM. She also participates in the College of Medicine Vertical Integrated Curriculum. Donna serves as a consultant and co-instructor in the Public Health graduate certificate and MPH programs. Please join us in welcoming Donna into her new interim role at the UVM Libraries.
